On the basis of our university’s philosophy that theory and practice should be equally emphasized, the Department of English provides a complete and coherent study of “four-year professional English acquisition,” including one “core” program and one “specialized” program. The core program is aimed at equipping students with the listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities of foreign languages while the specialized program consists of the two fields - foreign language teaching, linguistics/literature and translation. Besides, students may take extending courses such as second foreign language and business trade for the further development.

We try hard to internationalize our department by inviting some Japanese professors from other Japanese universities to our school as guest lecturers and by promoting international exchange student programs jointly with some Japanese universities. We also develop our courses on a practical basis. Students need to learn not only basic language abilities, but also general knowledge on Japanese literature, traditions, customs, religions or folklore.

Our department is the first one of its kind in terms of the multi-language structure, under which our students may be led to acquire general knowledge of the whole European cultural background. Also, with intensive language programs as well as some specialized courses on professional business management, translation, interpretation and teaching principles, students may be equipped with an international perspective and become experts on international trade, translation or education. Based on our existing conditions, our department is divided into two sections: German section and French section. Our medium/long-term goal is to establish a graduate school of European languages to cultivate more students to be foreign language teachers, language translators and interpreters, and European political, economic and trade staffs.

The purpose of this English program is to provide overall educational training for foreign language and managerial professionals in the cultural creative industries.In addition to pragmatic professional training in cultural creative professions, students are expected to have holistic personality and global international vision.The training and educational foci of this program include:

3. Underscore of theories and pragmatic experience

4. Cultivation on professional and team work spirit

To fulfill the needs in the professionals from the cultural creative industries, to promote Taiwan culture and cultural creative industries and to collaborate with the national development and better utilize the educational multidisciplinary stronghold of DYU, the multiliteracy instruction is implemented in the program.All the course instructors are teamed up from different disciplines to provide best teaching and learning facilities and recourses.The establishment of the program is to cultivate cultural creative professionals with training in humanity, spirit, global vision, and multidisciplinary talents.

This undergraduate program is specializing in European culture and tourism thus being different from the general tourism department. The curriculum encourages students to cross-cultural and trans-cultural learning, to enhance the multi-professional capacity, excellent teaching faculty and equipment add to the quality of the program. Interns from France and Germany are invited for lectures. Short term studies at European universities enable students to deepen their language skills and cross-cultural proficiency. Students will gain experience as tour guides and might place a job as professional tour guides for Europe, work at foreign companies.

Given the industries in Taiwan becoming more service-oriented, and internationalized, industries like digital content, international exhibition, tourism, and culture & creativity are key to Taiwan’s economic development. However, the success of the above-mentioned industries highly rests on personnel with foreign language skills, and meanwhile, those industries are the very places where the personnel can make full use of their strengths.

To address the needs of the service-oriented industries, the aim of the Foreign Language Service Industries program is to train students with foreign language skills to acquire and integrate diverse skills, such as cross-cultural communication, presentation, planning, information analysis, marketing, and problem-solving abilities, into their future careers, which in the long run will help Taiwan to stay competitive in today’s hyperpcompetitive environment.
